The Dentist

I have to go to the dentist today. I'm having my teeth cleaned and I'm dreading it.
I've been debating all morning whether to cancel my appointment. I hate having my teeth cleaned. Scccritch, Sccccratch, Scccccrape. It feels like a rake is dragging on cement in my mouth. Every sound is amplified, and I sit in the chair curling my toes and gripping the armrests.

Don't you wish you could turn off your own hearing sometimes. That there was a lever that you could switch on and off at will so you wouldn't have to hear or listen to anything awful or annoying. You could use it when your kids are arguing, or when you're in bed trying to read and can hear the television through the wall, or when the dentist is dragging a rake on cement in your mouth.

The problem is, I like to have clean teeth, and I was raised by Mother who has her teeth cleaned 3 or 4 times a year, who can be seen munching and crunching away on a toothbrush at all times and in all places, and who carried dental floss in her purse at all times and passed it out in all places.

At least the hygienist I have is gentle because nothing was worse than going to Dr. Nichol's and having Jody clean your teeth. My teeth ached for days after a cleaning, and it wasn't until I finally grew up and had my teeth cleaned by someone else that I realized why. Jody was rough. Way too rough.

All right, I guess I'm going. I'm dreading it but I'm going. Here's to clean teeth, and good gums. We all know that seeing a dentist regularly and having our teeth cleaned are some of the most important matters in life. It's right up there with Aunt Josephine and her good grammar.

I know your teeth will look as clean and white as your new blog does! Love the new look! Good luck at the dentist! And I HATE the sounds at the dentist! They are the worst!

Katie,
It was awful. She was really nice, but really rough.

Annaliese,
I wish my teeth would look as white as this blog.
They're getting worse and worse the older I get.
And yes, the sounds at the dentist are the worst, as is the fluoride. I almost threw up today, too. Mmmmmhmmm. I gagged somethin' awful on the fluoride.

Mary....all right, I knew it was you above, but felt like writing something to Annaliese since I was almost 100% certain it was her!
Kidding.

Well, I almost threw up. I gagged very hard and spit it all out on me and the cup. Nice! How old am I? I can still taste the fluoride now and it tastes terrible. Aren't the sounds of the dentist awful? The noise makes it feel so much worse. At least Dr. Elliott never stopped talking so it took your mind off what was happening. The hygienest today was silent! Silently working and scraping. Scritch, scratch, scritch like Mr. MacGregor with his garden hoe.
All right, thank gosh I don't have to go again for another six months! Blluuucccckkkkkk!!!

PS
I had to hold the fluoride in my mouth for a minute and slush and swish it around. Some of it got away from me....that was the problem.

I hate to go to the dentist too and haven't been since right before I got married, 11 years ago. I know that is SOOOOO gross but I can't stand them scraping at me and that saliva vacuum makes me ill. Just thinking about it is making my mouth freak out. Thank goodness I have strong teeth, so that I can avoid the dentist, but I really should get my teeth cleaned once a decade or so. I'll think about it. Good for you for going, and surviving the ordeal.

Julie,
I only go because I am so paranoid about my teeth, my kid's teeth, and everyone's teeth.
You're lucky you've got good teeth and have gotten by so long without problems.
I've been a couple times where every noise makes me want to jump out of my chair. I don't understand how dentists and hygienists handle all that scraping but I know it sounds much worse, and much louder when it's happening to your own mouth.
Anyway, glad it's over. I didn't want to go at all, but now my teeth look nice and clean so I guess it was worth it. Next time though I am going to bring my Ipod.
